This year ASLA offered field sessions on both Friday and Monday with great attendance.  The Professional and Student Awards Ceremony took place on Friday afternoon, November 11, and was close to standing room only. The general session on Saturday morning was well received with speaker, Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson (appearing remotely) and moderator Kate Orff, FASLA, in conversation. LABash Block Party (formally known as the Alumni Tailgate reception), had over 40 schools represented on the EXPO floor, and for the first time, was live streamed to select schools. SKETCH! was wildly successful with Chip Sullivan andattendees sketching in aisles and anywhere they could put pencil to paper.

COP27

For the first time, ASLA secured observer status at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Pamela Conrad, ASLA, and Kotchakorn Voraakhom, International ASLA, represented ASLA and IFLA at COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

ASLA announced Conrad and Voraakhom’ s participation via a blog post and also included a re-cap of COP27 outcomes. As part of a coordinated communications strategy, Conrad and Voraakhom reported via social media on their participation in events organized with Architecture 2030, the Government of Thailand, Bellona Europe Foundation, and other organizations, which ASLA reposted. These posts had 71,000 impressions and more than 6,000 engagements.

In Egypt, Voraakhom met with U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (Democrat-Rhode Island), World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and ASLA partners America Is All In and the American Institute of Architects to discuss ASLA program opportunities at COP28 in Dubai, U.A.E.

Planning Retreat 2022

Hello fellow Landscape Architects and happy holiday season! As we come to a close on 2022 and start welcoming 2023, the future is bright. Our Chapter continues to thrive due to our members and dedicated volunteers, and we thank you for that.

We will continue having discussions revolving around diversity, equity, and inclusion, community resilience, and people centric planning and design; as well as other important topics in and around our field. Our Chapter will be working to hear more from you all over the next year related to our NY Upstate ASLA community as well as student and member engagement.

We completed a day and a half planning retreat earlier this month with our Chapter’s members, volunteers and students. We plan to share our discussion topics and draft calendar for the 2023 year as part of the January newsletter. We are looking forward to an in-person awards celebration in March and getting together by sections throughout the year. In the meantime, we hope you have a wonderful holiday season with your family and friends!

Sincerely,

Nicole Cleary, NY Upstate ASLA Chapter President

Great Lakes Climate Action Seminar - Huge Success

Great Lakes Climate Action Seminar - Huge Success

On June 17 and June 24 the Great Lakes Climate Action Seminar was held. This virtual conference was made possible through the coordinated efforts of the New York Upstate ASLA Chapter together with the Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin ASLA Chapters. Professional work and ongoing research were presented by teams drawn from all four participating states. The seminar brought together landscape architects, engineers, planners, researchers, and civic leaders who presented topics ranging from the analysis of resiliency case studies to strategies that address public outreach and environmental justice, from shoreline and stream restoration to edible ecologies in urban environments.
