EMERGING PROFESSIONALS COMMITTEE

ABOUT

The Emerging Professionals Committee was formed in Fall of 2021 to support the unique needs of landscape architectural design professionals who are within their first 1-7 years of practice. The Chapter is excited to offer resources and support for the newest members of our profession as they grow into their careers.

The Committee has four over-arching themes for the support it offers:

  • Professional Development

  • Licensure Support

  • Work-Life Balance

  • Growing the Profession

Professional Development

  • We will work with the Chapters to offer professional development opportunities that inform and inspire our work, grow our networks, and empower us to take our next steps in our career. Educational workshops will be tailored to be relevant to newer members of the profession. These will include technical workshops, as well as events offered by affiliate organizations such as AIA and APA.

  • The Careers Page announces opportunities for currently available position openings. Many of these are tailored to emerging professionals.

Licensure Support

  • We will support anyone who is currently preparing for their Landscape Architecture Registration Exams (LARE), and are organizing virtual study groups to share study materials, connect with others who are studying for their exams, and form a support group to keep each other on track to be well-prepared for the exams.

  • LARE Study Groups begin January 2022. If you are interested in joining please fill out this form and we will include you in the study group coordination.

Work-Life Balance

  • We will help build a culture of health and self-care within our profession by creating space to discuss the work-life balance issues and strategies that we will encounter throughout the stages of our career. It is our intention to help build resilient and caring professionals whose energy is balanced between their professional and personal responsibilities.

  • Our first Work-Life Balance Panel is planned for early 2022. During the panel, we will provide prompts for reflection before and after the event, and during the event we will hear from Chapter members at many stages of their career reflect on the challenges they have faced while striving toward work-life balance, and share the strategies that they have had success with. A calendar link will be provided.

Growing the Profession

  • We will encourage young people and people from diverse backgrounds to become landscape architects. Our profession is better able to respond to complex design challenges when we empower the insights and expertise of our colleagues who bring their unique personal and professional points of view.

  • We are working with NYUASLA leadership to award membership grants for emerging professionals so that the associated costs are not a barrier for five (5) emerging professionals per year to benefit from membership. The application will be available in the upcoming months. Emerging professional membership grants are awarded annually at the Annual Awards Banquet.

  • We will collaborate with the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee on educating ourselves and reaching out to communities whose identities are not currently reflected in leadership positions within our field.

Current Members of the Emerging Professionals Committee

Anyone within their first 1-7 years of practice, including students that are graduating that year, are welcome to join the Committee. Non-NYUASLA members are welcome to join the Committee as well, and there are new incentives for emerging professionals to join the Chapter to enjoy the full benefits that the Chapter has to offer.
