President’s Message September 3, 2014
Hello NY Upstate Chapter members! All 220 of you! I want to send a TREMENDOUS Thank You to all of you, because at this moment we have the highest membership count our chapter has ever had!
2014 has been a year of “trying something new” in several new neighborhoods and boy have we done a LOT of it at the NY Upstate Chapter! With PLENTY more to come!
Fall may seem like it is fast approaching, but we have a fantastic “Section Event” next week (Friday September 12) in Schenectady! If you are in the Capital region and want to get on your bike AND earn a CEU, this is for you!
There will be a 14 mile bike ride starting at 2:15pm and at 4:30 a 1 hour CEU presentation focused on Retrofitting Upstate NY suburban areas with the team that will present a similar topic in DENVER this November!! Join us at Pinhead Susan’s in Schenectady for this great opportunity to meet your fellow LAs out for some healthy active living, continuing education AND happy hour afterwards! Register
2015 will see more Section events as each Section receives new leadership and representation on the Executive Committee. LOOK for more of these in your area, and if you have ideas on great ways to meet up and share LET US KNOW!
Next on your Radar should be our 2014 close-out event focused on FOOD in the Finger Lakes! This 4 credit hour CEU event in Skaneateles will feature speakers from Cornell and ESF with presentations on recent FOOD and FARM based studios and a special keynote presentation from Theresa Bowick, RN author of Collard Green Curves and resident of Rochester, NY. Ms. Bowick will speak about her struggle with childhood obesity and the role healthy foods played in changing her life. The day will be spent at the Mandana Barn in Skaneateles, NY and rounding out the evening will be a Farm-to-Table Dinner prepared and served by a local chef with local foods right in the barn! There may even be some music from Ithaca based Landscape Architect Rick Manning’s BLUEGRASS band! You will not want to miss this one!
November hopes to have some Section “Kick off events” hosted by the new Section Members-At-Large and December 5th will be the Chapter Annual Retreat. This event is the Executive Committee’s annual Strategic Planning Session and is open to ALL members. The event will be at Beaver Hollow in Java, NY. Let us know if you are interested in joining us as we map out the coming year.
