2016 Officer Nominations
It seems as though it was just yesterday that we had an election and you are correct. The Chapter staggers elections to provide some level of continuity within the Executive Committee. Over the last year, the Executive Committee has decided to move elections to a date earlier in the year so we can provide more transition and mentoring time between incoming and outgoing officers. We hope this will enhance the experience for incoming members by providing more time to get acclimated to the position and the resources that are available. If you have enjoyed the programs and services that have been provided over the past years, please consider volunteering your talents and time on one of the positions.
The Office of President is a three (3) year track program. All Chapter Presidents begin as a President-Elect, a full member who is elected for a term of one (1) year and acts as a “shadow” to the current President during their final year in office. Immediately following the President-Elect position term, the President-Elect becomes the President. Term length is two (2) years, beginning
at the annual meeting (fall) following elections.
Vice President - Program Services
The VP of Programs and Services position entails researching and planning events for the NY Upstate Chapter of ASLA. These events include smaller regional events, two day large conferences, and joint conferences. Each year the Executive Committee (ExCom) sets forth a theme and goals for the events for the following year. The Vice President, in coordination with the event Chair or Co-Chair,
researches potential events and venues before reporting this information back to the ExCom citing feasibility and potential issues. The VP of Programs and Services prepares a monthly report which are prepared and submitted prior to each of the Chapter’s monthly conference calls. Term length is two (2) years, beginning at the annual meeting (fall) following elections.
Vice President - Communication and Information Services
The VP of Communication and Information position entails oversight of all forms of external communication and distribution information to the membership and general public for the NY Upstate Chapter of ASLA. These communications include information gathered and redistributed on behalf of the Executive Committee (ExCom), state membership and National ASLA. The Chapter is challenged
yearly to further develop its outreach and overall effectiveness, and as a result, the VP of Communications and Information needs to always be seeking new channels of distribution (electronic and hardcopy). Term length is two (2) years, beginning at the annual meeting (fall) following elections.
The Treasurer shall be a Full or Associate member elected for a term of two (2) years.
The Secretary shall be a Full or Associate Member elected for a term of two (2) years.
At-Large Member (4 Position Available)
Elected At-Large Members represent the five (5) specific geographical areas of the
Upstate New York area. They are charged with the organizing of up to two (2) social events in their region to better engage Chapter membership and promote networking opportunities. They also coordinate with The Rivers Organization (TRO) for sponsorship and budget planning, prepare marketing materials for each event, and coordinate CEU’s as needed.
At-Large Members provide outreach, via email and phone calls, within their section to support and encourage participation in Chapter events. Term length is two (2) years, beginning at the annual meeting (fall) following elections.

Student Liaison (Cornell and ESF)

Liaisons are encouraged to have regular interaction with students, as well as support and encourage their participation in Chapter events. In addition, Student Liaisons assist with PARK(ing) Day activities, and will plan and implement one (1) student body activity.

Other Committee Assignments
The key function of the Membership Chair is to keep the chapter vibrant and strong by promoting chapter membership. This is done through retention and renewal of existing members, as well as the recruitment and prospecting for new members. Those with a gregarious and charismatic personality make exceptional candidates. The Membership Chair receives reports on a monthly basis from ASLA National identifying members whose membership term is expiring soon, as well as a list of those whose membership has recently expired. It is also very important for the Membership Chair to keep track of landscape architects who attend various functions, even non-LA functions but are not yet members and then approach those people, call them and email them to encourage them to become members and find out why they have not yet done so.
