Buffalo

Celebrating Olmsted in Delaware Park
LA's gathered at Marcy's Casino in Delaware Park at 5:00pm to have refreshments and a champagne toast to Olmsted.  LA's talked to park visitors about Landscape Architecture.

The weather definitely kept the public at bay for the Buffalo event; however we still had about 25 people show up.  It was a nice mix of local LA’s, some Olmsted Conservancy folks and a few public individuals.  We talked about the event, landscape architecture and the fact that Olmsted would have been 190 years young yesterday. At about 6:30 we toasted Olmsted and sang Happy Birthday to him.

THANK YOU to Green Paper Products and their donation of biodegradable cups for the event! Check them out at greenpaperproducts.com

Garden Tour and Birthday Cupcakes!
The New York Upstate Chapter of ASLA and the Highland Parks Conservancy partnered for a celebration in Highland Park.

Despite the cold temps and rain we had a great turn out with roughly 20 people.  The event began with an introduction to the Rochester Olmsted Parks, from the Highland Parks Conservancy.  Led by local Master Gardeners, the group toured the Poet’s Garden.  Following the tour, attendees enjoyed cupcakes in celebration of Olmsted’s Birthday.  The group was very appreciative of  the Monroe County Parks, who graciously opened the Lamberton Conservatory for the group to enjoy the cupcakes (warm and dry) inside the conservatory.  The event was a win-win with a mixed attendence of gardeners and landscape architects.  Each spent time learning about eachothers contributions and interests in the landscape.

THANK YOU to Monroe County Parks for donating the Lamberton Conservatory for the Cupcake Reception!

Syracuse

What is Landscape Architecture?
The rain and wind held off long enough to allow the party to take place at Perseverance Park in downtown Syracuse.  Several local Landscape Architects attended with examples of recent or upcoming work in the city.  Many thanks to Keplinger Freeman Associates, Maxian + Horst, EDR, Klepper Hahn & Hyatt,

Appel Osborne and the 4th year SUNY ESF Landscape Architecture Design Studio for their participation and work put on display.  The celebration began at noon with cake served to over 60 people during the 2 hour birthday party for the guest of honor, Fredrick Law Olmstead. It was nice to see a turnout of about 20 professionals and students who shared stories and had a moment to catch up with friends. Talk was mostly optimistic about the improving economy and job market. Needless to say, those who stopped by had a good time.

Guerrilla Art Installation
The installation of a forced perspective, in colored masking tape, in Bailey Plaza.

The event went really well - none of us had done a large-scale drawing like this, so it required a bit of ingenuity and planning, but went off without a hitch. Folks on the ground level were quite curious which made engaging them about landscape architecture a whole lot easier. We encouraged them to walk up to our studio's green roof where they could enjoy a better view of the chair and celebrate Olmsted's birthday with cake from a local bakery. Special thanks to Jesse Nicholson, Ethan Dropkin, Tracy Hudak and Hunter Zupnick for helping with the drawing. Thanks also to the rest of the Cornell Student Chapter of ASLA - Rudolf Uhlemann, Melissa Poulin, Janice Tung, Petra Marar, and Kaitlyn Roadifer for helping to engage the public.

Local LA's met in Washington Park and passed out cake and informed the general public about the importance of Landscape Architecture and our contributions to community health.

Although the day was a bit overcast and chilly the volunteers handed out cupcakes and talked to people about Landscape Architecture.  While the turnout was less than expected the message still go out to those willing to stop for a cupcake!
