Water's View of Genesee Valley Park (Rochester) | October 10 In Rochester, participants spent the morning with Mark Johns, ASLA kayaking the Genesee River to learn about the history of the Olmsted design Genesee Valley Park and discuss the past, current, and plans for future development of the park. The kayak tour gave participants a view of the park that is not often experienced. We lucked out with a sunny October morning and the temps weren't too low. Thanks to all who participated, the Rochester Section looks forward to planning more active sessions for our region.
Healthy Waters Advocacy Day (Syracuse)| September 25 We welcomed our National ASLA president to our region and spent the day equipping our members with the tools needed to advocate for landscape architecture in New York State. During this event we spent the morning with representatives from the Save the Rain program to learn about the water advocacy successes in Onondaga County (1CEU). During our lunch session, we were joined by Julia Lent, Hon ASLA who provided ASLA Advocacy Training. The afternoon field sessions included visits to three projects in the Syracuse area (3 CEU). The event concluded with an evening social event at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo, where we were joined by ASLA National President Richard Zweifel.
PARK(ing) Day | September 18 Students from the SUNY ESF landSCAPE Club and the Student Chapter of NY Upstate ASLA took over two parking spaces on a busy campus street. The students used the theme of local food to construct a Farmers Market complete with a stand serving caramel apples! You could even get a selfie of you and a friend in “American Gothic” complete with a pitchfork!
Students from the Cornell Landscape Architecture program took over two parking spaces in downtown Ithaca near Collegetown Bagels. The students taped out there design in one parking spot and created the finished landscape in the other! Nick Schwartz, NY Upstate ASLA VP of External Affairs stopped by and as you can see the day was a huge success! There is a plan for a charrette for Parking Day 2016 in the early part of March of 2016 with professionals and students in the Syracuse area! Watch for it!
